Elmore: “I’m not complainin’, I’m just a little worried.”

That’s what he always says when I ask him how things are going.  He has carried a lot of weight for a lot of people for a long time.  He started out like that when he was a kid.  He was good at everything he did; a people pleaser and they kept piling it on.  He couldn’t say no and still can’t.  When he says,  “I’m just a little worried” and I think he’s referring to himself and not to things in general, I will press the issue of balance.    One day I was teasing him and asked, “Elmore, what do you put in your soup of responsibility to make it taste good over the long haul? “  I did get a little grin out of him before he changed the subject. 

 

Maybe someday he’ll work it out, the inside and the outside before something inside of him wears out or stops up.  I appreciate Elmore, it’s the only thing I can do for now.
